Apple lands in legal trouble for blocking crypto technology from iOS payment apps

Apple, despite facing constant criticism from the Web3 industry for its hostile policies, now finds itself in a legal situation. A group of resentful Apple users, who are also part of the crypto community, have now filed a class action lawsuit against Apple. In their complaint, the group accused the iPhone maker of failing to expand its range of peer-to-peer payment services and in particular limiting crypto payments. The complaint was filed in a district court in California, United States.

The plaintiffs, in their complaint, accused Apple of entering into anticompetitive agreements with Jack Doresey’s Block-owned Cash app and PayPal-owned payments app Venmo. With these agreements, Apple was accused of blocking cryptocurrency payments by forcing some of its users to continue paying at “rapidly rising prices.” The lawsuit also alleges that Apple exerts excessive control over all running apps iOS using technological and contractual constraints.

“These agreements limit feature competition – and the price competition that would result – across the market, including by preventing the incorporation of decentralized cryptocurrency technology into existing or new iOS peer-to-peer payment apps.” , CoinTelegraph cited the cause as he says.

Apple has not yet reacted to the development. The tech giant, which has maintained a safe distance from the volatile cryptocurrency sector, has not revealed any plans to merge its ecosystem with Web3 anytime soon. Apple has become infamous for running afoul of Web3 apps. In June this year, two Bitcoin wallet providers: Zeus and Damus called out the iPhone maker for restricting its apps on Apple’s App Store.

Meanwhile, in April, a California appeals court called Apple’s policy of not allowing app developers to integrate third-party payment methods into their services is considered “illegal.” The court ruling is expected to make changes to Apple’s App Store payment practices and could also allow Web3 apps to add more operability to their iOS iterations.
