Fox and Polygon launch blockchain tool ‘Verify’ to eliminate deepfakes
Media empire Fox Corp.Fox News’ parent company has tapped the Polygon blockchain project to counter artificial intelligence-generated media stories, or deepfakes, with an automated tool that helps authenticate real articles and images.
Fox on Tuesday released an open source protocol called “To verify,” used specifically to establish the origin and history of recorded media, based on Polygon test of participation (PoS) blockchain. Verify, currently still in beta, should also help connect AI platforms with media companies.
According to a press release, Verify was developed by Fox’s technology team and should allow readers to know where certain images came from.
“On Verify, publishers can register content to prove its origin,” the press release said. “Individual pieces of content are cryptographically signed onchain, allowing consumers to identify content from trusted sources using the Verify tool.”
Terms of the partnership were not immediately disclosed, including whether Polygon is paying Fox in connection with the partnership or vice versa.
