An international team of researchers has started a new project that will use ChatGPT’s technology to build an AI-based tool for scientific investigation. The new project, Polymathic AI, will learn from numerical data and physics simulations from across scientific fields to help scientists simulate everything from supergiant stars to Earth’s climate, unlike ChatGPT, which works with words and sentences. Shirley Ho, group leader at the Center for Computational Astrophysics at the Flatiron Institute in New York City, US, and principal investigator of Polymathic AI, said that this “will completely change the way people use artificial intelligence and machine learning in science”.
Citigroup reduced its staff by 2,000 in the third quarter (Q3), bringing annual severance costs to $650 million. Mark Mason, the company’s chief financial officer, said on a conference call with analysts to discuss earnings that the company has lost about 7,000 employees overall this year. He added that the previous $450 million recorded at the end of June corresponded to the loss of approximately 5,000 jobs. Mason also highlighted that repositioning costs were the cause of the company’s reduction in headcount; He pointed out that the costs incurred by the company so far this year do not fully reflect the reorganization announced by Citigroup last month.

The Australian federal government is moving quickly to regulate the digital asset sector at the exchange level, and it may not be long before it starts requiring cryptocurrency exchanges to hold financial services licenses from the Financial Regulator regional. The Australian Treasury said the new regulatory framework aims to address consumer concerns while promoting innovation in the digital asset sector in its recently published ‘Regulation of Digital Asset Platforms’ consultation document made public on 16 October.
