US presidential candidate Donald Trump endorsed cryptocurrency during a special event for Trump NFT Holders at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Wednesday night.

The combative former US president and 2024 hopeful lamented that crypto companies are fleeing America.

“Crypto is leaving the US because of hostility toward crypto,” Trump said. “Let’s stop this because I don’t want this – if we want to accept this, we have to let them stay here.”

Responding to questions from the crypto-savvy crowd, Trump said he would accept campaign donations in Bitcoin and other tokens.

from Trump changing the view towards digital assets comes as analysts suggested on Tuesday that his winning the US presidential elections in November would be good for Bitcoin. And he went after the incumbent, claiming that Pres. Joe Biden ignores encryption.

“Biden doesn’t know,” Trump told the crowd, also pointing to the chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

“[Gary] Gensler is totally against it, the Democrats are totally against it,” Trump said. “But I’m okay with that.”

Ron Hammond, director of government relations at the Blockchain Association, drew a link between the Mar-a-Lago event and the passage of a resolution in the US House condemning the SEC’s policy on crypto banking.

“I didn’t think encryption would be an election issue, but today’s opposing statements proved it,” he tweeted. “Twenty-one Democrats voted against their own party today, realizing the trend: it’s a lost question to be in the anti-crypto army.”

In April, prices of Solana-based meme coins featuring caricatures of Trump and Biden increased, according to blockchain data from DexScreener. At one point, “Jeo Boden” and “Doland Tremp” had a market capitalization of $473 million and $83 million, respectively.

Upon hearing that a token mocking Joe Biden was worth $240 million, Trump he said: “It’s a lot of money for a coin, I don’t like this investment.”

Tonight’s event was billed as an “extraordinary dinner held at the President’s home in Palm Beach, Florida,” a perk of purchasing a Trump NFT.

“President Donald Trump will host an extraordinary evening for some very special Trump Business Card holders,” the official website announced. “Nicknamed the Winter White House, you will enjoy a unique experience in the president’s historic residence and exclusive members’ club.”
